APRIL 2008

QSP is available for distribution.  Sales will continue through May 23, but you can turn in your packets at the May 7 SU mtg to Ann Meixner.  Ann has enough packets for every girl in your troop and extras, if needed.

Early bird registrations were given to leaders.  Changes can be made and saved online this year and troops will get a $25 girl scout shop if 50% early bird and register using formatta.  Please turn them in at the next SU mtg.  Girls who do not Spring register are not assured placement in the same troop.  They will be placed in the Fall.

SHARE - we are $991 short of goal for SHARE.  $4,900 has been raised.  Keep up the good work and don't forget to bring your luxury tax (donation to SHARE) for the encampment GSopoly.  ALSO MAKE SURE THAT YOUR ENCAMPMENT ADULTS HAVE ATTENDED ONE OF THE ADULT MEETINGS.  One more meeting has been set up for Sunday at 7 PM.  Contact Terri for more information.

Paid positions are available for girls 14 and up with the summer camps this June and July.  Contact Melissa for more info.

Kelly reminded everyone to nominate an MVP for your troop.  If you need a form, click here.  Kelly would also like to get the names of all girls earning awards (bronze, silver, gold, trefoil, leadership, religious) this year.

Bridging is May 28, 7 pm - Capitol College  All parents are invited!  Two girls from each level are needed for the flag ceremony.  Contact Terri or Brenda.

MARCH 2008

Bring your luxury tax donation to encampment.  SHARE is at 74% (and we got 17 more at the meeting)

Don't forget that the troops at encampment will get a sheet cake to decorate in any way they like.  You can bring additional decorations and be as creative as you wish.  Pictures will be taken and there will be a slide show of the creations! (Maybe we can put them on the website).  Also don't forget the mandatory encampment meeting 3/26 and 27.

February 2008

We now  have 253 registered girl scouts!!

Share:  We are at 73% of goal and we are doing better than any other SU in the area.  KEEP TRYING!

Terri and Brenda will not be continuing as SU managers after June 2008.  If you would like more information about the assignment, click here and/or contact Melissa

Cookie Delivery Day is February 22.  HELP IS NEEDED!!!!  If the temperature that day is below 32F, there may be a change of location.  Booth assignments were handed out.

Encampment News:  Each troop needs to make a BIG token to carry with them at encampment.  One leader suggested buying or making a pinata !

Thinking Day:  Remind your girls about SWAP etiquette and bring 3 swaps.  Don't forget your donation to the World Friendship Fund.  Remember that Juliette Low sold her pearls to help fund Girl Scouting.  Parents are not allowed in the WSSC building.  Gallon jugs are needed (before Saturday morning).  They can be dropped off at Terri's.

Each troop is asked to make a Birthday Box to be donated to LARS.  Please bring the donation to the March SU mtg and note if it is for a girl or boy and the age range.  A list of suggested items can be found on this website.

Troops are needed to do bridging events.  The community bridging will be on a Wed. night in May.

SU Team Meeting 12-2-2007 Minutes

SHARE

The team discussed various ways to meet our goal. The Outdoor Skills Day was a success as far as donations, but it would have been nice to have more girls attend. Upcoming opportunities already in the schedule are: coat check donations at the dance; a brief talk about the benefits of Girl Scouting and how SHARE contributions help to be given at the dance; the same talk to be given at bridging. New ideas include: craft and supply sales at the SU meetings; a troop penny drive to be used as the Luxury Tax at the encampment; and a mother-daughter bingo or tea party. Kelly and Lynne are going to look into a SHARE patch program to help families understand the importance of SHARE.

 Membership

Melissa has increased our girl membership goal to 440 girls. The team feels that this is an impossible goal given that over the last 5 years our girl numbers were 297 (2003), 272 (2004), 233 (2005), 247 (2006). We have 239 girls registered so far this year, largely due to the 10 recruitment events and other campaigns (see below for list). However, the team felt that we would do as much as we can to recruit new members. Terri will contact Melissa to do a flyer for Scotchtown Elementary to fill up the existing Brownie and Junior troop and ask Melissa to do a general flyer to all schools in January. We will continue to help troops with Bring-a-Friend activities. Brenda will investigate placing an ad in the Spartan News (Laurel HS) for girls who are looking for community service hours and could help with troop meetings or want to join a troop. We will also contact the Laurel Main Street Festival committee and /or PNC Bank to see if we can get a booth at the festival. If girls are recruited in January and we do not have room, Brenda has volunteered to run a once-a-month drop-in troop for girls and their moms to introduce them to Girl Scouting and to get them ready for Encampment.

We also discussed how Spring Registration went. There have been some comments that girls didn't want to sign up in the spring because things weren't going so well in their troops. We should think about attaching a general interest indicator to the registrations which can survey the parents on their experience with Girl Scouting. We could offer a way to transfer into another troop at that time.

2007 Recruitment Activities:  National Night Out, Girl Scout Open House, 8 Back-to-School Nights or PTA nights, "Wear Your Uniform" campaign, "Bring a Friend" campaign, 4 School Liasons, St. Mary's bulletin advertisements, Local newspaper ads, Bond Mill and Laurel Elementary newsletters

SU Events

The dance is right on target. We have a troop doing flowers and have offered the pictures to another troop.   Thinking Day has been saved. The committee will present a flyer at Wednesday's SU meeting.  The Encampment Committee is continuing their planning.

SU Finances

The SU currently has $1600 in the account. We have been questioned by Melissa as to why we have this much money in reserve. This money is earmarked for usage fees for the dance, Thinking Day and Encampment. We need to pay out these fees before money comes in from ticket sales so it is necessary to maintain this balance in our account.

 Public Relations

Lynne is going to run a piece on the service that our troops are providing. It may end up as a letter to the editor thanking Giant for letting us Carol for Cans in their store. Sometimes a letter to the editor is easier to get into the paper that an article.

October 2007 Program Department Update

Religious Awareness

Our council has an amazing diversity of cultures, national origins and faiths. Please be aware of cultural and religious differences in your troop/Service Unit/Association, and keep them in mind while scheduling meetings and events.

This is our Fair Date Planning language, which was written by our Interfaith Committee last year:

Guided as we are by the Girl Scout promise - "...to serve God..." - it is the genuine hope of the GSCNC Interfaith Committee that leaders, service unit teams and associations will recognize the diversity of faith communities involved in the Girl Scout community of the Nation's Capital. We recognize that scheduling any event or meeting involves balancing busy schedules, site availability, timing and limited resources. With the knowledge that we serve girls of many faiths, we strongly urge that religious observance dates also be taken into consideration when planning meetings, activities, and ceremonies for girls and adults. (Calendar of common religious events-printable)

Brownie/Junior Zink Activities for Bring-A-Friend Meetings

We have Brownie/Junior Zink Activities that are perfect for Bring-A-Friend troop meetings. These activities will fill a 1 ½ to 2 hour meeting, and are a good way of including new friends in a meeting. The packet has a shopping list and set-up directions for each event, so it is very simple to use.

Publications Changes

To use resources wisely, both Capital Notes and TTG will be published fewer times per year. Capital Notes will now be published four times a year – in August, January, March and May. TTG will be published three times a year – in August, January and March. A new yearbook-style teen publication will recognize the achievements of Teen Girl Scouts in May. Another new publication is the Mosaic Forecast/MORE Yellow Pages, which will be published twice a year – in August and January.

Program Kit Request Form Changes - This form has been revised and is available on the forms page on the website, www.gscnc.org/forms. This form replaces all previous Kit Request Forms.

FIRST SU MEETING SEPT 5
The first leader's meeting was September 5.  Those attending the meeting made Monopoly "tokens" -- badges made from the flat items that we were asked to bring in.  Most of us had family pictures, favorite places, hobbies, and nicknames on our tokens.  A few of us forgot to bring in our personal items so they went directly to jail without passing GO.
Here are some other items discussed at the meeting:

Health Histories will no longer be collected by the service unit.  Each leader is responsible for having complete and up-to-date health histories for your troop.

Ideas are needed for Thinking Day 2008.  If you have any suggestions or ideas, please contact Brenda or Terri.  We discussed a wide range of activities from each troop doing their "own thing" to an international pot luck.  What do you think?  Do you know of a space we could use?

YES, this is an encampment year and the theme is GS-opoly!  Help is needed, so present this to your parents who might want to attend encampment.
